Research
I pursue research projects that force me to think and work outside my normal comfort zone, and to collaborate with people from a variety of disciplines, to produce innovative research that is uniquely relevant to the contemporary study and practice of criminal justice.
I've been able to apply my professional experiences in the criminal justice system (as a police officer, 9-1-1 dispatcher, and emergency medical technician) to important issues in need of rigorous research. Risk Terrain Modeling (RTM) is one prominent example of this ongoing endeavor to produce applied scholarship. RTM diagnoses why crimes cluster at certain places, and forecasts where they are likely to emerge in the future. GIS technologies and the concepts of spaces and places are key elements of my current research projects.
Products from this research have been presented at professional conferences and published in dozens of peer-reviewed journals, books and book chapters. It has led to several professional awards and honors. (View CV for more details).
